What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants replace teeth that have been lost or permanently damaged.

Losing a tooth can significantly impact your life. In addition to the obvious discomfort caused by a gap in the mouth and the effect on your ability to chew, it can also affect a patient’s confidence. Modern dental implants make it possible to replace teeth that have been lost or damaged permanently.

Apart from the noticeable aesthetic improvement they provide, dental implants also offer many advantages over other teeth replacement treatments. Dental Implants are small titanium posts which replace the root part of an absent tooth. The implant is placed into the jaw-bone and once it has integrated, it can support a crown, bridge or denture.

Smile with Confidence

Single Dental Implant

Often a single tooth is lost due to an accident and a dental implant can provide a reliable long-term solution in many cases. This treatment does not require any cutting of the adjacent teeth – such as would be the case with a traditional bridge.

Multiple Dental Implants

Dental implants can also be used to support multiple teeth. This usually involves the placement of two implants, which are used to support a fixed bridge.

Full arch

To replace all the teeth in an arch, as an alternative to a denture for example, requires several implants to be placed. The number of implants required is dependent on the clinical assessment of each individual case.

Implant Secured Dentures

A loose fitting denture is a common problem for thousands of people. Securing dentures using dental implants restores chewing function and reduces irritation of the gums, leading to an enhanced quality of life. The additional support and stability gives the wearer the confidence to carry on their life, eat what they want, smile and laugh without being self-conscious.

Dental Implant Treatment FAQs

Are dental implants painful?

Most patients report minimal discomfort during and after the implant procedure. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area during the surgery, and any post-operative discomfort can be managed with pain medication prescribed by your dentist.

How long does the dental implant procedure take?

The duration varies depending on the complexity of the case. Typically, the implant placement surgery takes about an hour per implant. Afterward, a healing period of a few months is required for the implant to fuse with the jawbone before the final restoration (crown) can be placed.

Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants?

In general, individuals with good oral health, sufficient jawbone density, and healthy gums are eligible for dental implants. Your dentist will evaluate your specific situation and determine if dental implants are the right choice for you.

What happens if I do not have sufficient bone for implants?

The key to successful implants is the quality and quantity of bone and we sometimes have to provide a replacement if there is a deficiency of bone. This usually takes the form of a small augmentation around the neck of the implant. Depending on the size of the deficiency, we can usually carry this out at the same time as implant placement.
